Sonia Kang's background in movement comes from taking ballet and modern dance as a young child. She continued to take dance classes at Arizona State University. Sonia found her dances classes to be a welcome change from her business classes. In 1998, Sonia graduated ASU with a Bachelor's of Science in Business. Upon moving to Boston and working for a Public Relations firm, Sonia continued to dance and apprentice at the Dance Complex in Cambridge Massachusetts.

It was there, Sonia learned about yoga and Pilates. She took classes and workshops in the Boston area at the B.K.S. Iyengar Center founded by Patricia Walden. In July 2000, Sonia became Yoga certified through the Yoga Institute, a program approved by the Yoga Alliance. She made a change to teach full time by leaving her position at non-profit agency. Sonia was taught the principles of Core Dynamics Pilates and received her Pilates Method Alliance Certification in November 2006.

Sonia has been a member of the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) since 2003. It is the international not for profit professional association for the Pilates method. The PMA's mission is to protect the public by establishing certification and continuing education standards for Pilates professionals. Sonia is also a member of the Arizona Pilates Alliance which organized in 2007. Sonia has expanded her fitness training through attendance at the IDEA Fitness conference 2007, PMA conference since 2003 and several workshops given by well-known teachers in the Pilates industry. She is BOSU certified, a licensed Fletcher towelwork provider, and CPR certified.

Sonia served as a Faculty Associate in the School of Community Resources and Development and the College of Human Services at Arizona State University from 2004 to 2009. She has taught Fitness Fundamentals, Core and Agility training, Introduction to Nutrition, Pilates and Yoga. Sonia's style of teaching is to present the content of information that best serves the student. She saw positive results each semester terms of students' weight loss and diet change. She explained exactly in real terms why exercise and proper nutrition are key to one's overall health. Sonia left her teaching position at ASU to open the Weon Keyong (One Kee-ong) Health Center and to have the flexibility to raise her young toddler. Sonia has learned from her own experience and vicariously through the teachings and experiences of well-versed and knowledgeable instructors. Sonia states, "You should feel your limitations but most importantly, feel your capabilities. Pilates should make you feel this. When you know in the future you can accomplish more, and believe this to be true. Then you are working toward something...."

  • Remember, it is not you adjusting to the exercises, it is the exercises themselves that must adjust to you. The pictures serve as guidelines, not what you are expected to copy. The bottom line is to feel the movement in the correct muscle groups and see physical change in your body.
